It is one of the more remarkable sites Maxa Constructions has had the opportunity to build on as a custom home builder in Far North Queensland.

Designed by Kelder Architects, the owner and architect came to Maxa Constructions together, and from that first conversation, the project became a genuine three-way collaboration. Over an 18-month build, weekly Zoom meetings kept the owner, architect and builder in close conversation throughout, working through design challenges, buildability and progress as the project evolved. It is the kind of working relationship that produces better buildings, and Mowbray House is evidence of that.

The brief from the outset was not simply to build a home with a view, but to build one that genuinely belongs to its landscape. The architecturally designed home is oriented around a northeast-facing courtyard, responding directly to the valley below and the forested mountains that surround it. The courtyard sits at the centre of the home the way the valley floor sits at the centre of the property. It is a considered piece of architecture, and one that required an equally considered approach to construction.

The home is anchored into a natural ridgeline through a series of site cuts, stepping with the topography across a number of terraced levels. Building across a site like this demands close coordination, careful sequencing and a deep familiarity with how tropical home construction works in Far North Queensland. Expansive windows and doors, along with an open-plan pavilion layout, allow natural light and breezes to move freely through the home, reducing reliance on mechanical heating and cooling.

The material palette draws on the heritage of the region. Concrete, timber and corrugated iron reference the traditional Queenslander farmstead while keeping the overall expression contemporary and grounded in its place. Integrated concrete planters and a bushland colour scheme allow the building to settle into the landscape over time, rather than sitting apart from it.

For Maxa, a boutique builder in Cairns and Far North Queensland, Mowbray House represents the kind of project that calls on everything a custom home builder needs to bring to a job: a remote site, complex topography, a highly resolved architectural design, and a client and architect who knew exactly what they wanted.
